About the Hydrogen Steelmaking Consortium

Nippon Steel Corporation, JFE Steel Corporation, Kobe Steel, Ltd., and The Japan Research and Development Center for Metals (JRCM) formed the Hydrogen Steelmaking Consortium, and applied for the Green Innovation (GI) Fund Project of “Hydrogen Utilization in Iron and Steelmaking Processes.” The plan was adopted on December 24, 2021, and the companies started joint technological development.

The 1st Hydrogen Steelmaking Committee was held by company executives (June 15, 2022) to confirm that the companies will work together in the upcoming technological development.

Integrated and Efficient Steering Structure in the Consortium

  • The Consortium has a steering structure joined by all members for the efficient development and smooth implementation of the technology. Specifically, technological exchanges are made in regular meetings hosted by the project leader (Nippon Steel) and the deputy project leader (JFE Steel).
  • Achievements made in the development are confirmed in the Hydrogen Steelmaking Committee attended by company executives. Each company provides necessary management resources to maximize the achievements.
